How To Apply A Tanning Lotion Perfectly

By Julia Suarez

Using self-tanning lotions for the first few time can be quite difficult because it can have untoward effects on the skin like streaking of the skin or orange coloring of the palms.

Once you get the hang of it however, these self tanning lotions come in quite handy especially during the summers.

How To Apply Correctly

Misapplication of self tanning lotions can have funny results and this does commonly happen with people. Its not so much a problem that has to do with the commodity rather it is the technique that is being used to apply the lotion that is faulty.

Getting To Know DHA

A chemical identified as dihydroxyacetone or DHA is present in these tanning lotions and this component gives the top-most layer of the skin streaks that are temporary, right after its application.

If you are not cautious in the beginning the skin layer called stratum corneum is affected by wrong application of the tanning lotion. The effect is so fast that it is difficult to stop it harming your skin once it has started.

Avoid streaking

One of the major problems associated with these tanning lotions is that it causes colored patches on the skin. These light and dark patches look like the stripes found on a tiger. Few initial steps have to be taken to make your skin fit to endure the reactions of the tanning lotion.

Before applying tan lotion

Many people are unaware of this prerequisite to getting the tan from self tanning lotions. You must take the trouble to moisten and exfoliate your skin before you apply the self tanning lotion. Neglecting this step is the major reason why people develop streaks.

Users of these tanning lotions must go for a daily process of exfoliating their skin before taking a shower in the morning to avoid the damage to the skin. This has to be done on a everyday basis for a few days before application.

Men can also shave a couple of days ahead of the tanning exercise as it is another way of skin exfoliation. The intervals, however, needs to be equivalent to the time used for exfoliating by other means.

Be slow & gentle!

When it is the question of actually going through the process of proper application of the lotion, you need to be highly gentle with the work. Complete spreading of the lotion over the skin and rubbing it in is necessary.
