World Health Organization has raised the alarm because of the rising incidence of obesity and the health risks that come with it. Excess body fat is a major health risk factor along with the damage of heart disease and cancer. Obesity has doubled every five years. Also it is estimated that close to 20 percent of school-age children are obese not overweight. Because of poor physical activity habits, excess television viewing, too much Web surfing, too many video games, and junk-food addiction and other poor nutritional habits.

Unfortunately, most people won't change the "lifestyle" habits and look to the "quick fix" procedures to remove body fat overnight. There is no quick and easy remedies to this problem. It's YOUR LIFESTYLE, and is based on arithmetic and biochemistry. One pound of fat contains 3500 calories. To gain one pound of fat, you intake 3500 calories (Calories not spent in daily work output). To lose a pound of fat you must intake less than the 3500 calories. (Burn more than you eat)

An exception occurs when you follow a "Ketogenic" diet (as in the Atkins or Protein Power) - a high protein, and low carbohydrate intake. Ketogenic diets produce and cause you to expel Ketone bodies ( incomplete metabolism of fat) that still contain calories. Fat will be lost that is not accounted for in energy expenditure. Although Ketogenic diets are generally not dangerous, the nutritional imbalances requiring lots of supplements and these programs are difficult to follow, often produce temporary results and are usually accompanied by bad breath and body odor (Ketones don't smell nice).

Weight loss is a simple process but you have to be patient. It took you years to put it there so don't expect it to leave overnight. This entire issue deals with insulin control and lactic acid control. Insulin is the hormone produced in response to blood sugar and is responsible for removing sugar (glucose - the product of carbohydrates from the digestive process) from the blood. If you don't produce enough insulin - you die but if you over produce, you become obese or very resistant and other health problems arise like Type II Diabetes.

If the glycogen (storage form of sugar) levels in the muscles and liver are satisfied, the remainder is converted to fat and stored as tri-glycerides in the body fat. When you are not physically active the glycogen storage remain full so fat storage become prevalent. With chronic high carbohydrate consumption it will lead to chronically elevated levels of insulin. When your insulin level is up you will not burn fat, you will feel hungry, and the liver will produce more cholesterol, tri-glycerides will be high and you risk many inflammatory conditions like asthma, arthritis, psoriasis, and migraines. So if you want to be healthy and lose fat you need to control the insulin your body produces.

With normal circumstances of sitting, standing and walking, unless you just eat or drink extra carbohydrates, almost 85% of your energy comes from fat. Fat is the energy source of a resting body. When running a marathon 50% of you energy comes from fat. The more you exercise the more fat you will burn. The better control you have of your insulin the less fat your body will store. Nonetheless, the 3500 calorie deficit rule still applies. So a 1,000/day calorie diet, creating a 200-500 calorie/day deficit, it would take 7 - 17 days to lose a pound of fat. If you added 400 non-carbohydrate calories and daily exercise (approximately 3 miles equivalent) you could lose one more pound per week.

It is advised that exercise be at a conversational intensity to avoid producing lactic acid. Lactic acid, a product of high intensity exercise, also inhibits the mobilization of fat for energy. Losing two pounds per week, if you are diligently exercising, should make you happy because you did it the healthy way and it will become your lifestyle. Your current weight is a product of and supported by your lifestyle. Change your lifestyle. There are no true quick fix solutions.

Weight Loss Occurs When The Person Intakes Less Then What Your Body Needs

Unintentional weight loss in the context of health, physical fitness, or medicine, in weight loss is the reduction of the your total body mass, due to a mean loss of fluid, body fat or adipose tissue and/or lean mass, especially bone mineral deposits, muscle, tendon and other connective tissue. It could happen unintentionally because of an underlying disease or can arise from a conscious effort to improve an actual or perceived overweight or obese state.

When you mismanage the type 1 diabetes mellitus, known as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), can lead to an excessive amount of glucose and an incorrect amount of insulin in the bloodstream. This triggers the release of triglycerides from adipose (fat) tissue and consumption (breakdown) of amino acids in muscle tissue. This loss of both fat and lean mass, could lead to a significant reduction in total body weight. Untreated type 1 diabetes mellitus will most likely not produce weight loss, because a person will get acutely ill before they would have had time to lose weight.

One area of the science aspect is bio-energetics which include biochemical and physiological energy production and utilization systems, and is frequently evident with diabetes, and ketone bodies, acetone particles occurring in body fluids and tissues involved in acidosis, also known as ketosis, is moderately common with severe diabetes.

As an addition to weight loss due to a reduction in fat and lean mass, illnesses such as diabetes, certain medications, lack of fluid intake and other factors can trigger fluid loss, and fluid loss in addition to a reduction in fat and lean mass exacerbates the risk for an affliction. Infections such as HIV may alter metabolism, leading to weight loss. Hormonal disruptions, such as an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), may also exhibit as weight loss. Recent research has shown fidgeting to result in significant weight loss.

Intentional weight loss refers to the loss of total body mass in an effort to improve appearance or to change the health and fitness level you are currently in. Therapeutic weight loss, in individuals who are overweight or obese, can decrease the likelihood of developing diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, osteoarthritis, and certain types of cancer. Attention to diet in particular can be extremely beneficial in reducing the impact of diabetes and other health risks of an expanding waist.

Weight loss occurs when the person intakes less then what is needed to fuel the body this is a negative energy balance. When the body is consuming more energy than it is gaining, it will use stored reserves from fat or muscle, gradually leading to weight loss. It's not uncommon for some people who are currently at their ideal body weight to seek additional weight loss in order to improve athletic performance, and/or meet required weight classification for participation in a sport. Others may be driven by achieving a more attractive body image. Consequently, being underweight is associated with health risks such as difficulty fighting off infection, osteoporosis, decreased muscle strength, trouble regulating body temperature and even increased risk of death.

One least invasive weight loss methods and often the recommended is adjusting your eating patterns and increasing your physical activity, generally in the form of exercise. Physicians will usually recommend that their overweight patients combine a reduction of processed and caloric content of the diet with an increase in physical activity. Another way of losing weight include use of drugs and supplements that decrease appetite, block fat absorption, or reduce stomach volume. Coaching is a rapidly growing part of the industry becoming more popular in the United States, with the number of available coaches almost doubling since 2000. And finally there is surgery (i.e. bariatric surgery) that is used in more severe cases to reduce the size of the stomach, so limiting the intake of food.

A crash diet refers to the restriction of nutritional intake (except water) for more than 12 hours. The result is for the body burn fat for energy with the goal of losing weight in a short time. But the body reacts by storing fat and burning lean muscle tissue so this strategy is not recommended for intentional weight loss. Crash dieting is not the same as intermittent fasting, in which the individual periodically abstains from food.

With a considerable amount of products that promise to make weight loss easier, quicker, cheaper, more reliable, or less painful. They include books, CDs, cremes, lotions, pills, rings and earrings, body wraps, body belts and other materials, not to mention fitness centers, personal coaches, weight loss groups, and food products and supplements. In1992, US residents spent approximately $30 billion on all types of diet programs and products, including diet food and drinks. Between $33 billion and $55 billion is spent annually on weight loss products and services, including medical procedures and pharmaceuticals, with weight loss centers garnering between 6 percent and 12 percent of total annual expenditure. Around 70 percent of Americans' diet attempts are in the self-help category. These diet fads are a positive trend for this sector as Americans ultimately turn to professionals to help them meet their weight loss goals.

Are Eggs Nature's Best Diet Foods Friend?

Eggs are the near perfect diet foods found in nature! It is chock full of vitamins, minerals and amino acids with just the right amount of lean protein. What you can cook with eggs seems unlimited. Hard boil them for great diets foods and tuck them into your purse or briefcase for low calorie mid-day snacks. You can fry them, soft boil them or make egg drop soup. The possibilities are endless. However you cook them - make sure you eat eggs at least 3-4 times per week. You can even eat them everyday. People always thought they caused high cholesterol, but that has been proven false. You can confidently eat eggs knowing there is no better filling low calorie food for your health!

A Healthy Eating Plan for 2010

There are a lot of misconceptions about eating and health. One of the most common presumptions is the focus on the quantity of food people eat. Although, this may be a valid thought, it is more important to be focused about the quality of foods that we eat. The body has a homeostatic, or balancing mechanism that will affect hunger and satiety centers of the brain if nourished correctly. When eating the appropriate foods, the bodies innate intelligence will tell you to stop eating when it has the proper nutrients. The following is a list of general guidelines one can follow to obtain a good foundation.

The foods we ingest eventually affect every cell in our body. You truly are what you eat. When shopping, don't put anything in your basket that wasn't around 10,000 years ago! i.e. fruits, grains, vegetables and seeds. As a general rule, only buy items that are on the periphery of the store. These are your basic foods groups. Foods that are eye level are foods that the manufacturer wants you to buy, not necessarily good for you. The same thing goes for your children; foods at their eye level are usually of poor nutritional value. Stick to the basics. Buy foods that are fresh. Try to omit junk foods or food that is highly processed.

Read the labels. If you can't pronounce the ingredients, you probably shouldn't purchase it. Foods that say hydrogenated should be omitted. They compete for sites in the brain where good fats are used and may cause neurodegenerative diseases. Buy foods that are rich in nutrients. Vegetables and Fruits, preferably organically grown, are the most advantageous choice. Avoid vegetable and fruits that have been sprayed with pesticides or grown in soils that have all the minerals depleted. The best place to obtain these is a good health food store or the natural food section of your food store. I prefer to steam or saute my vegetables and then add some spices, this assures that the vitamin and minerals don't get compromised like the other cooking methods. Whole grain cereals, breads and crackers, eggs and poultry, and cold-water fish are foods that one should consume every day.

For snacking, I would recommend raw nuts and seeds, yogurt and other natural dairy products.

Omit most foods that are white. White bread and flour, sugar and all foods made with them. These items are full of "empty calories". Cakes, cookies, pastries, crackers, pies, doughnuts, hamburger buns have virtually no nutritional value. These foods can actually rob your body of essential nutrients. Replace these foods with brown or basmati rice, whole grain breads or bean sprout breads, whole grain pasta and whole grain cereals. Stay away from "enriched" flour some whole grain labels read, as it may actually be white flour.

Consume natural sweeteners such as honey or concentrated fruit juices. Avoid synthetic sweeteners and sugar.

It is important to obtain good sources of proteins, which are the building blocks for all the enzymes, hormones, antibodies and neurotransmitters in the body. Some good sources are eggs, nuts and seeds, cold-water fish, beans, peanuts, lentils, sunflower seeds, shellfish and some cheeses (cheddar, Swiss).

Eat natural fats, such as clarified butter,not margarine. Nuts are also an excellent source of fats, like almonds. Olive oil may be used on salads, but avoid heating it as it becomes rancid at high temperature. Try to stick to oils that are liquid at room temperature as a general rule. There are some excellent new studies on Virgin Coconut Oil lately. It has been shown to help you loose weight. It is healthy for you and it tastes great! I like to add a spoonful to my shakes. It brings a nice flavor to it. Healthy shakes are an excellent snack either mid morning or mid afternoon, especially for those with hypoglycemia.

We should learn from our European friends that our meals should take place in a calm surrounding and it is an event that should be enjoyed and savored. Take the time to chew your food thoroughly and take breaks throughout your meal. Our society is becoming more fast paced and meals are "gobbled" down.

If you stick with these basic rules you will be on the right track towards good nutrition.

Eating Healthy - How Hard Can It Be?

As obesity climbs to epic proportions in this country, it's not impossible to believe that our parents and grandparents, for the most part, ate much better than we do now. They had fresh food which more than likely was purchased every day or so, mainly because refrigerators were smaller and freezers were essentially nothing more than a place to make ice cubes and maybe store a steak and a package of bacon.

Meats were fresh, produce was fresh, eggs and milk were fresh. Today, even though we still buy fresh foods, our freezers are much larger but they are full of frozen prepackaged dinners, frozen juice, ice cream, frozen burgers and hot dogs, and all sorts of frozen snack foods for the kids after school.

Decades ago even schools made kids eat healthier. There wasn't much of a choice, actually. They got a hot meal, milk, and maybe dessert. No cokes, no vending machines with chips and cookies, no coffee or frapaccuinos, and no energy drinks loaded with sugar and caffeine. Kids got a balanced meal - in accordance with the food pyramid knowledge of the day.

Unfortunately, many people feel that they have nothing to worry about if they're already thin. They fail to realize that even fat people can be "healthy" if their cholesterol levels are normal, and thin people can be at risk for clogged arteries and high cholesterol if they eat junk food.

Eating healthy means different things to different people. For one person, eating healthy simply means not drinking sugar laden soda, forsaking chips, and limiting all desserts to anything that is fat free. Someone else might take it more seriously and not only stay away from bad foods but actively add good foods to their diet. There is a big difference between not drinking cola and making sure you have 8 glasses of water each day.

Another person might have a salad every day for lunch, but that salad could be covered with regular blue cheese dressing. Her friend might have a chicken breast and a vegetable - which is much healthier in the long run, saving over 500 calories and about 14 grams of fat.

Until a critical episode occurs, most of these people don't have a clue they aren't eating healthy. They believe they are immune to the ill effects of pigging out on some of the worst food choices possible. They equate size with health. Find any 40 year old who works out, take a small size, looks terrific, and eats food that helps put her one step closer to the grave yard each day. Ask her to describe the last salad she had, and she'll likely describe something that was covered in tons of regular dressing that also included chunks of cheese, meats, croutons, and cole slaw. Delicious, yes. Healthy? Heck no!

Eating healthy is not a diet. It's a lifestyle. One that doesn't get adjusted to easily or quickly if you don't really see the benefit or the need. Don't wait till it's too late because changing your ways.
