We have been asked over and over to share our criteria by which we judge our diet reviews, and rate one diet higher than another. There are many factors that go in to our analysis but there are many common traits that our most successful diets share. This article will summarize four of our most important criteria that will put you well on the way to diet success.
Allows you to eat anything. Ok so that headline is a little misleading, you can't really eat anything all the time, but you should be able to eat whatever you want, in the correct portions. Why should you be able to eat what you want? Because at some point you WILL eat what you want, and if foods you like aren't allowed on the diet almost all of us will break down at some point and eat it. If you know you are going to eat forbidden foods, why would you try a diet that doesn't allow you to eat them? Sounds like a recipe for failure to me.
Has a sensible mixture of foods and food groups. Have you ever seen those diets where you eat one thing over and over? Yeah, maybe eating broccoli soup every meal of every day for the next six months will help you lose 20 pounds, but are you getting all the nutrition you need? Absolutely not! A good diet will factor in a good variety of foods to give you all the vitamins and nutrition you need and will keep the rest of your body healthy in the process.
Will make you work out more often. It's no secret, if you want to lose weight you need to exercise more often than you did before, no matter what you eat. Sure, eating right is a very important part of weight loss and dieting, but its equally important to get regular exercise every day or at least a few times a week. By exercising more often your muscles burn calories, and continue to burn them even when you aren't exercising. Any diet that doesn't encourage exercise is not doing you any favors. Your body needs exercise to prevent heart disease, to burn calories and to prevent the effects of aging as we all get older.
You can keep it up after the official diet ends. Most people go on a diet for a few weeks or months and when they lose the weight they eat like they normally did before they started. If you lost weight using a fad diet, then you will most likely gain back all the weight you lost and then some because the weight loss process will be reversed. A good diet will teach you to eat properly and show you how to sustain results long after the "official" diet has ended. Look for a diet that is strong in balance, exercise and sounds reasonable. If you cant see yourself sticking to a diet during and after your official diet period, don't start it, you are just setting yourself up for failure down the line.
